Why WordPress updates break sites, and how we test them first

Maintenance · · 2 min read

If you have ever clicked “Update all” in WordPress and then found a blank page, a broken layout or a contact form that stopped sending, you are not alone. Updates are the most common reason a working WordPress site suddenly stops working. They are also the most important thing you can do to keep it secure.

Why updates break things

A typical WordPress site runs WordPress itself, a theme and somewhere between ten and thirty plugins, all written by different people and released on different schedules. When one of them changes, the others do not always keep up:

  • Plugin conflicts. Two plugins load different versions of the same library, or one changes something the other relies on.
  • Theme changes. A theme or page builder update changes how layouts are stored, and older pages no longer look right.
  • PHP versions. Hosts move to newer versions of PHP, and older plugins that were never updated stop working.
  • Big jumps. A site that has not been updated for a year has a lot of changes landing at once, which makes problems more likely and harder to trace.

Why skipping updates is worse

It is tempting to leave a working site alone. But outdated plugins are the way most WordPress sites get hacked: once a security fix is published, attackers know exactly what to look for and start scanning for sites that have not installed it. Not updating does not avoid the risk. It swaps a small, fixable problem for a much bigger one.

How we update a site safely

  1. Test on staging first. We apply every update to a private copy of your site and check it there, so conflicts are caught before they reach your visitors.
  2. Back up the live site. A full backup is taken right before anything changes, so we can roll back in minutes if we need to.
  3. Update and check. We update the live site, then check the pages and forms that matter most to your business.
  4. Keep a record. Every update is listed in your monthly report, so you know what changed and when.

It is not complicated, but it needs to happen every time, which is exactly the part that gets skipped when you are busy running a business.
