Cheap hosting vs. managed WordPress hosting: what you are really paying for

Hosting · · 2 min read

Hosting is the one part of a website most business owners never think about, until something goes wrong. Plans range from a few dollars a month to much more, and from the outside they can look like they do the same thing. They don’t.

What cheap shared hosting is

On budget shared hosting, your site lives on a server alongside hundreds of others. That keeps the price low, but it means:

  • Your speed depends on your neighbors. If another site on the server gets busy, or gets attacked, yours can slow down too.
  • Security is mostly up to you. The host keeps the server running, but keeping WordPress, plugins and backups in order is your job.
  • Support is general. Support teams handle every kind of website, so WordPress-specific problems often get “it’s your plugin” as the answer.

What managed WordPress hosting adds

Managed WordPress hosts, such as WP Engine, run servers built only for WordPress. Depending on the plan, that typically means:

  • Faster pages, with caching and a content delivery network (CDN) built in.
  • Daily backups you can restore with a click.
  • One-click staging sites, so changes can be tested on a copy before they go live.
  • Security at the server level, including firewalls and protection against common attacks.
  • Support from people who know WordPress.

Hosting is not the same as maintenance

Even the best host won’t update your plugins for you, check that the update didn’t break your contact form, or tell you that a plugin you rely on has been abandoned. Good hosting and good maintenance work together: the host keeps the server healthy, and maintenance keeps the site on it healthy.

Is it worth it?

If your website brings in leads or sales, a few hours of downtime or a hacked site will usually cost more than a year of better hosting. If it is a simple brochure site that rarely changes, budget hosting plus solid maintenance can be enough. The right answer depends on what the site does for your business.
